Causes and Symptoms of Piles (Hemorrhoids)

Most people have heard about this rather common disease, but how many people understand it?

Piles, commonly known as bawasir in Hindi are haemorrhoids which become unpleasantly inflamed in the pathological (anal) area. As against to popular misconception, every person has haemorrhoids. Only when these haemorrhoids get inflamed for an unduly long time is when it is termed as pathological haemorrhoid or piles.

Piles may be internal or external in nature

As according to statistics only 10% of the cases of piles become severe and need to be treated and probably even surgically removed. Piles may be internal or external in nature. The inner ones are more common. As its name suggests, are located 2- 4 cm above the opening of the anus. The external ones are located outside the anus and can be extremely painful and itchy if a blood clot forms within it.

The blood vessels around the anus and in the rectum will stretch under pressure and may swell or bulge. Inflamed veins (haemorrhoids) can develop when pressure increases in the lower rectum. We now go on to understand some of the causes of piles.
